Cafe Dumonde in New Orleans, LA

On our road trip across the southern USA we stopped in New Orleans.

Hubs LOVES New Orleans. He LOVES The Saints football team, LOVES Cajun food, and he LOVES fleur de lis covered anything.

I LOVE hubs.

Despite my extreme morning all-day sickness, I accompanied him to all the Cajun hot spots and walked up and down the French Quarter for hours.  In return I got to have breakfast here:

Oh you know how bread and sugar make me happy!  I think this was hubs’ first time here… I was pretty excited about showing him something new in New Orleans, something he had not already discovered!
It was a cloudy day (that later turned into a downpour which left us begging cab drivers to stop and pick us up) and so I thought ordering a warm cup of hot chocolate was a great way to start the day.

Yes, that cup of hot chocolate was divine. Sooooo delish!

Hubs and I only ordered one plate of beignets since I wasn’t sure how little baby inside would handle it.  Turns out he is totally my baby because he LOVED it!  Still, I only had one just to go easy.

I kinda wish I didn’t!

On our way out of New Orleans we actually stopped at another Cafe Dumonde location and although the location wasn’t nearly as fun as the French Quarter location, the food was just the same and the wait was 100% shorter!  Have you been to Cafe Dumonde? What did you think?

Now if I could only get a good recipe to make beignets…

photography tip: 1 object, photographed 5 different ways

Hubs and I love taking pictures, we consider it a hobby and we love taking photos of our surroundings.  Recently we saw an online coupon for a photography class through a local company, so we jumped at the chance to learn something new about our beloved hobby!

The class took place in downtown Jax and, coincidentally, it was our first time really exploring downtown! We had many different techniques we learned that day, but my favorite was an exercise in creativity.

What was the assignment?

Find ONE object and take about 5 different photographs of it, with no two photos being the exact same.

Immediately I knew what object I wanted to photograph, it was the first thing that caught my eye – a large iron fence with a padlock to keep unwanted guests out.  the different line angles and the detail on the fence are what drew me to it.

Photo 1: straight on, at eye level, full-frame clear shot of an iron fence.

Photo 2: shot from the left, slightly angled downward, partial-frame clear shot of the iron fence.

Photo 3: bent down, shooting upward from the left side, focus on the lock and latch of the iron fence.

Photo 4: bent at waist, shooting straight on from the left side, focus on the rust detail surrounding the lock and latch of the iron fence.

Photo 5: bent at waist, shooting straight on from the right side, focus though the fence, to the background behind the fence.

Isn’t that fun?!? This is an easy way to break the mold of always taking the same type of picture. You find one object that interests you, and position yourself in different ways to capture it.  Don’t be afraid to get on the ground, lay on your back, step up onto a ladder – break out of your comfort level and you might be surprised by how interesting on object can be.

So, I’m dying to know…which shot was your favorite???

SeaWorld in Orlando

As part of our mini-vacation in Orlando, we decided to go to SeaWorld on our last day.  Before I go in to the details of the park and our time there, I just want to give a shout out to SeaWorld for their awesome gift to military servicemembers and their families*! Each year SeaWorld gives military members (and their families/dependents) a free pass for all day admission to one of their parks.  That means that hubs, me AND Faith all got to get in to the park absolutely FREE. NO gimmicks, no rules – just plain free. Thank you SeaWorld – you are awesome!

We got to SeaWorld around lunch time, about a good hour before the downpour began.  Since Faith & I had soggy tennis shoes from the day before, we opted for flip flops at SeaWorld.  We also opted to be the ones to get wet that day, and hubs donned the $9 magical poncho from Disney with the backpack-o-electronics.

First up was the Manta roller coaster. Faith went with hubs to get on the ride, and I sat down in the shade because the ickiness in the air was thick – the rain was about to come so the humidity was beyond unbearable.  I managed to snap that shot up there of the Manta coaster as hubs was coming around – you can’t see it in this view, but his face is priceless! Also, he was barefoot!  Faith decided once she got up there that it was a little much for her so she walked thru and waited for him to finish the ride solo.

Lucky gal…wish I had that option the day before at Space Mountain!

Below that photo is a trio of pics: Faith with Shamu, some dolphins in their cove and Faith petting a sting ray!  I would not be surprised if she became a veterinarian or a dolphin trainer…

The thing we liked most about SeaWorld is how INTERACTIVE it was. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom there was a lot to see and rides to ride, but in terms of real interaction with animals, it was pretty limited.  At SeaWorld we could pet stingrays, feed sea lions, watch and pet dolphins, and you even had a chance to get up close with the large animals in the shows. I really liked the live shows at SeaWorld – twice I even sat with Faith in the Splash Zone! That water is freezing by the way!  They had a bit of humor for the adults and you can just tell those animal trainers LOVE their jobs – it’s awesome to see.

One of my favorite memories of the day however, was when we stopped at the little section of fair-ground style games. You know the ones – shooting hoops, tossing rings on bottle neck, shooting water into the hole to make the horse run, etc.  We asked Faith if she’d like to pay one game and she said yes – she picked a game that had shallow cups that you had to toss a wiffle ball into. The trick was that the wiffle ball bounces so erratically when you toss it that it really is a matter of chance. Hubs bought a round for her and asked her if he could toss just one of the balls – she agreed. After all her attempts (and misses) there were two balls left. Hubs took his shot…

…and he won!

We were all so excited! Accroding to what the game moderator had told us when we bought the round, he should have won a stuffed baby Shamu; however he got a penguin with Kanye West sunglasses on instead. Fail.

It was ok, though, because Faith thought the penguin was cute – so that’s a win in my book!  We toted him around and later on Faith was asking me to help her come up with names for him – being that I was mentally fried from 3 days of walking, talking, riding, sitting, soaking, etc. the best I could come up with was something like, “SeaWorld.”

DJ Ice living on the edge.

What do you think about DJ Ice?” she asks.

What?! That’s a great name! Why in the world did you ask me when you already had such a cool name? My name was totally lame.” I told her.

Well, I just wanted to see if you had another name.

Clearly you do not need my help in naming him – DJ Ice is perfect! I love it!

After we got DJ Ice we went to see the finale show with Shamu & friends. It was downright awesome. I just can’t believe those whales are so smart!  This time hubs and Faith sat in the Splash Zone (while hubs still wore the poncho) and I sat up high in the bleachers, with the backpack-o-electornics.  After the show was over we were heading out of the park when we passed by the paddle boats. Earlier in the day they were closed due to the rain, but now they were open and Faith really wanted to go on them. We had a free pass for the paddle boats so Faith chose me as her accomplice while hubs stayed behind and took photos. Once we were in the paddle boat (I should mention here that it was sprinkling out still so I had my umbrella with me in the paddle boat – Faith didn’t care about getting wet, but I was getting chilly so I kept it – if you look closely at the paddle boat photos below you might be able to see the one we are in because of my umbrella) Faith decided to do the paddling.  So I was steering and she was paddling. Eventually she wanted to do both, so there I sat, getting paddled around a lake while hoisting an umbrella above my head. It was kinda like a scene from some Jane Austen book – or at least it seemed like it should be!

Oh, and in the above photo where you see my sad face followed by a photo of me clutching Faith’s arm -yeah, I got roped into another ride that had too many drops and falls.  The saddest thing was the two girls behind us (probably no more than 14 years old) had to, along with Faith, keep reassuring me I was gonna be ok.

I was NOT ok.

When I thought the ride was over, I found out I was WRONG. We had yet ANOTHER dark and creepy drop to go through… seriously, people pay for this stuff???

Perhaps it was all the water surrounding us all day, but the rain didn’t really feel as out of place at SeaWorld as it did at Magic Kingdom…either that or maybe we had just gotten used to doing the whole amusement-park-in-the-rain thing : )  Whatever it was, SeaWorld was a big hit and we had a wonderful time!

I have not been paid or compensated in any way by SeaWorld to make these comments. These comments are my own and are a direct result of my experience visiting the park.

disney’s magic kingdom + a downpour = magical?

On day 2 in Orlando we went to Disney’s Magic Kingdom.

The Magic Kingdom kinda lacked on the whole “magic” front – at least to me. Although, now that I think about it – perhaps it was magical that we managed to survive a downpour that persisted for hours without ruining any electronics we brought with us. And it also didn’t seem to dampen our spirits in the least.

It did cramp hubs’ paparazzi-style photography however, but there again that is kinda magical!

We were about an hour in to the park when the down pour came in. In an instant you had throngs of people cramming inside gift shops, kids running around and splashing in puddles, rides closing down and a magical amount of poncho’s showed up for sale.

Magic.

A $9 magical poncho and 3 pairs of soggy tennis shoes later, we were on our way again.  The plan was that I would carry the backpack, containing cameras, phones and my Kindle – don’t judge me, I learned me lesson from Animal Kingdom the day before – and the poncho would protect those goodies.  It should be noted that all those valuables were also inside gallon sized Ziploc bags INSIDE the backpack. One can never be too careful…

Faith and hubs just went for it and decided to get soaked.

In the beginning we all walked around barefoot – like many other people and because we knew the next day we would be at SeaWorld and we would need our tennis shoes to be dry. After about 3 minutes we saw the futility in trying to keep our shoes dry.  Not to mention every ride/attraction required we wore shoes – so the putting-on-then-taking-off-then-putting-back-on routine got old after the first time.  Once we embraced the wetness we continued on!  While people remained huddled and terrified of the water, we breezed through lines and got to see a lot of the park!

At the end of the day we went back to Space Mountain (we had gotten fast passes earlier in the day) and as we were making our way toward the ride I started getting a little scared. Remember how I hate roller coasters? Well hubs had me convinced this was no worse than riding on a bumpy stretch of road until we got inside.

Ummm, maybe I didn’t remember this correctly…” he says in a low voice.

What do you mean? You said it wasn’t bad at all! That’s why I agreed to come with y’all.

Yeah, umm, you know – I don’t think it can be that bad. I mean, I was a kid – they can’t make it that bad for a kid. Can they? You can always just walk through the seats to the other side and wait for us to finish.

What?!!? Not cool babe, not cool. I don’t feel so good. Maybe I will just wait for y’all on the other side.

Finally as we’re 1 set of people away from boarding I look at hubs.

There is no walk-thru option.

I probably would have made a sassy comment except I was afraid to open my mouth for fear of  throwing up from nerves.

The car was a three-person car so we immediately decided I would be in the middle; this worked since Faith wanted the front anyway and hubs was probably feeling bad enough for me that he didn’t care where he sat. The ride began and instantly I started screaming.

Yes, we hadn’t even really started moving and I was screaming. I probably was getting some rude stares, but since my eyes were squeezed shut I can’t confirm that.

Only once did I open my eyes, and it was just long enough to know I didn’t want to keep them open. I shrieked in terror and tears were streaming down my face the entire time. Yes, I am THAT woman. But in all fairness, I warned them I do not do roller coasters. I don’t think hubs believed me until he was deaf from my shrieks. When the ride ended I was so emotionally broken I could barely walk. I stumbled along behind Faith & him, desperately trying to wipe my face and get it together.

We came to the area where you can see the photos the ride snaps of you in motion and there I was: complete horror on my face and holding on for dear life.

It was quite a sight to see, especially given I was sandwiched between two wide-eyed and smiling people. We were thisclose to buying the photo simply because of the comical value, but at the time, things were still too touchy for us to make a decision about that; looking back I kinda wish we had bought that photo! We left the ride and continued through the park to catch the shuttle to Epcot, where we planned to eat dinner and see the famed fireworks show as a cap to our evening.

I might or might not have missed the beginning of the show because I was trying desperately to make it to the French pastry shop to stock up on bread.

I also might or might not have snuck in the exit door since the entrance door was already closed and locked.

Oh, and maybe I bought 3 croissants, an apple turnover, a slice of cheesecake, a strawberry tart and another item that is slipping my memory.

The fireworks show was awesome and it was kinda magical (even if we weren’t at the Magic Kingdom anymore!) watching all those colors and shapes in the drizzling rain surrounded by family.
