my hubs is a rugged maniac

This past weekend my hubs participated in an event called Rugged Maniac. He registered for it last year and he’s been anxiously anticipating the event for several months now. Last month we got a scare when his boss announced new working hours that were gonna be effective 6 days a week, because the race was set for a Saturday morning and the location is about an hour and a half away from where we live. Thankfully he got permission from his boss & was able to compete in the event.

I wanted to go with him to show support – and to take pics. It’s been a while since I’ve had a whole Saturday to share with him, so I really wanted to be there. Even if it meant I had to wake up at 7am on a Saturday morning!

Since the event was an hour and a half away, hubs stopped at the gas station on our way out to make sure we were good. While he was inside he decided to get me a treat.

Because he’s sweet like that.

He came back to the car with a bag Krispy Kreme donuts. “Are these all for me?” I ask.

Yep!”

Babe, you are so sweet, but that’s a lot! I just had breakfast…

Well you can eat them for lunch.”

Not a bad idea…

We continue on our way to the race and make it there with plenty of time to spare.

Because that’s life with a military man – always EARLY.

Initially hubs was wearing camo pants and boots because he’s been involved in mud run-like events before and he wanted to be prepared to get super muddy. But once we got there and realized NO ONE was wearing pants or boots, he started to re-think his approach. Luckily he had brought a change of shorts with him and his finger shoes (I don’t actually know what they are called, but I’m sure you know what I’m talking about – if not, it’s ok, you’re not missing out).  So because we had time to spare, he was able to run back to the car to change.

While I was waiting for him to return, I made some friends with two girls near the bleachers I was sitting on. We chatted it up and right before he came back they asked, “Why aren’t you running the race?”

Ha!” I laughed, “I don’t run. You know how running makes most people happy? How it releases endorphins? Well not for me it doesn’t,” I said. “Truly, something is wrong with my endorphin pathway because I get ANGRY when I run. Like really angry!

Really?” they skeptically ask as they start to create distance between us.

Really. But it’s ok, I just stay away from it and I seem to be fine!” I retort as I start searching for my Krispy Kreme bag in my purse to console me.

I’ll admit: I do feel kinda guilty about noshing on Krispy Kreme in the midst of all these active people running the race.

I’ll also admit I don’t feel guilty enough to stop eating…

At least I look like I’m in shape!

By now the race has started. I was able to get a good shot of hubs at the start, before all the dirtiness began.  After running up and down hills and crawling through tunnels and scaling a 7 foot wall, he came to these nets that he had to climb and then jump off. I was curious how it would turn out since he doesn’t like heights – he told me later he just did it so fast so he wouldn’t think about it and that’s how he got through.  After the net came these log stumps in the water – they reminded me of that show Wipe Out and I desperately wanted them to wobble so I could watch people falling down. I was only blessed to see one, but it was worth it.

It’s wrong, I know. But man it is funny!

After the log stumps the runners disappeared into the woods (to run a 2 mile stint through ankle deep sand and various tire obstacles) before they emerge for the final stretch though a muddy swamp arched with barbed wire.  I was so happy to see hubs face come through the woods – he was still smiling for the camera!

Hubs crawls through the mud and emerges ready for action! He sprints the final way, hops over the fire pit and crosses the finish line! I’m so proud of him! The coolest part of it all to me was that he was number 828. Why is that cool, you ask? Because my all time favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:28!

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

The sheer fact that hubs got the day off to run the race was a testimony to that!

After the race hubs cashed in his coupon for a free beer.

Because apparently beer is one of the best things you can drink after running a race.

I don’t believe it. But as hubs says, “You don’t have to believe it for it to be true.

Touche.

craft project: spray paint + mirror

My project begins with my beloved gold framed mirror I’ve had for almost 10 years.  My goal: paint it white so I can repurpose it for use in our home.

I took the frame outside onto our porch and started by taping off the corners and covering the glass; I bought 2 white poster boards and used them over the mirror.

I also bought a painters tarp so I could set the mirror on it and protect the balcony floor and railing.  Although sanding is recommended when you’re painting over an existing coat of paint, I didn’t bother sanding this for two reasons.  One, the detail is so ornate I didn’t want to mess it up and two, I didn’t mind if a little color seeped through since I was going for a more vintage look, versus a modern one.

I used a semi-gloss white spray paint (2 cans) and did about one layer on each side.  I noticed the paint dripped on the sides that were perpendicular to the ground. Oh yeah, I said perpendicular. And you thought math was totally useless! (Side note: it kinda is.)

I went over the details several times, since they had so many nooks & crannies.  I rotated the mirror twice and for the final coat I actually laid it flat on the ground. I probably should have done that from the start, but this was my first time spray painting something so large that I thought standing up would be better.

Did I mention it was daylight when I started and it was 10:30pm by the time I finished? That includes dry time, but part of the reason it took so long is because I started about an hour before sundown and then I had to stop and go back to the store to get another can of paint!  (Originally I only bought one.)  So when it was done I wanted to hang it up over my desk. This was actually a really brave move on my part since I’m so short this mirror is almost as wide as I am tall!  Nonetheless, I got on my step stool, lifted the mirror up and repeated “Please Lord help me get this on the hooks,” over and over. It only took me two tries (and a forehead full of sweat) to get it on there! So, what do you think?

my golden mirror

Back in my college days one of the first jobs I had was working at The Home Depot. I started as a cashier and soon found my self addicted to the hardware section. I’m a hands-on learner, so it’s no surprise that I’d be all over the area that caters to that draw.  I made friends with the guys in the department and quickly gained knowledge of the products. When the time came that a position opened up in the hardware department I jumped at the chance to fill it. And I did.

Being “on the floor” was so much more liberating than being stuck behind a register with a constant stream of patrons. I loved it! I often found myself in other aisles learning about those products too. I can’t help it – I’m a bit of a curious cat! On day I noticed the flooring department had some clearance items. One was this gigantic antiqued golden framed mirror.

I LOVED it! (I won’t go into a rant about how random it was for a flooring department to be selling mirrors…but I’m sure you know how I feel about that!) I asked one of the guys about it and told him I wanted it. He marked it an extra percentage off and approximately $35 later it was mine! Nevermind that I didn’t have room for it, or a place to hang it – I knew one day it would come in handy.

I’ll spare you the details of its life for the past 8 years and let’s just say when the hubs & I were packing up my place back in Texas before the move to Florida he asked me about the mirror.

“What are you gonna do with that thing?”

“Oh! The mirror? Well I’m bringing it of course! I love my mirror!”

“Yeah, but it’s gold colored. I hate the color yellow gold…and it doesn’t match anything we have.”

(Insert annoyed sigh from me here) “Well babe, we can put it in storage then. I’m not getting rid of it – I love this mirror and I got such a great deal on it! I can’t part from it.”

So the mirror made it’s way to Jacksonville. On the way we stopped at Ikea and the hubs asks me, “Hey, if I buy you this brand new big mirror will you get rid of the old one?”

“No! I won’t. If you hate the color so much maybe I can paint it. But what if it messes it up? I will be SO mad at you…”

“Ok, how about this deal?” he asks. “I buy this new mirror and we get home and you try to paint yours. If it screws up then you have this pretty new one. And if not, then we have 2.”

Now we’re talking.

Deal!

As most of you know, moving is a lot of work. Even more so when it’s Florida (read hot and humid) and you live on the 3rd floor. Needless to say – the mirror went straight to storage.

And there it sat.

Until a couple weekends ago when I had a day off and the itch to craft bit me. Armed with a couple of cans of white semi-gloss spray paint and some masking tape – I was ready to go for it and see how it turned out!

Tomorrow come back here and see the finished product!

not your mama’s peanut butter cookies

I got an email from hubs while he was at work today.

It went something like this, “GOOD USE FOR THE CUPS EH?” and had a link to Picky Palate’s version of peanut butter cookies – with only 2 ingredients! Yes, that’s right folks – 2 ingredient cookies!

It shouldn’t surprise me that (1) hubs is looking on Picky Palate (especially since we all know what kind of eater he is) and (2) that he’s daydreaming about Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups at 10am – he’s obsessed. In fact, if you recall – he made me agree to registering for PB cups on our wedding registry. Oh yes he did. But he made up for it by taking me to Tahiti, so really – who am I to complain?!?

Based off that registry, we actually had a friend give us a whole BOX full of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for a Christmas present. I’m a fan of peanut butter and I’m a fan of chocolate, but I’m just not a HUGE fan of PB cups. I like the little ones, but we had a box of mostly regular (and even King Size) ones.  I’ve been bugging the hubs to eat them because I gotta admit: my apothecary jar isn’t becoming when filled with bright orange wrapped candy. And also partly because I know if he doesn’t eat them I’ll have to toss them in 6 months when they are still there!

So he sends me the link and I respond with something like, “Yeah, I bet those are rich!

His response? “Do it!

Clearly he was excited – because this is a man who doesn’t use punctuation frequently, if at all.  So, being the good wife I am, I promised him I’d have a stack waiting when he got home.

According to  Picky Palate, you simply pulse 24 snack size (.55 oz) Reese’s PB cups in a food processor, add an egg and mix until creamy.

Then scoop mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment (or wax) paper.  She mentions using a medium scoop to make the portions, and I though I was using that, but clearly my medium was her XL (because everything’s bigger in Texas?) so I’d recommend going smaller rather than larger.  This means you’ll have to watch the cook time as it will be less, but it works better in my opinion. Then you mash (gently) the scoops to flatten them to 1/2″ and sprinkle a dash of sea salt. (Admittingly I only added the salt because I thought it would make for a nice photo…and I was right!)

Then you bake them in a 350 degree oven for 15-17 minutes. On the first batch I did (aka ginormous cookies) they baked for 15 minutes and they came out perfect. On the smaller scoop batch I did, they baked for 15 minutes as well, but they were a little too crispy for my liking.

While they are not my favorite version of peanut butter cookies, they are a great way to use leftover candy (Easter, Halloween & Christmas) and I think it was really creative of Picky Palate to attempt turning a candy into a cookie!  And because it was my hubs’ idea, I’m sure he’ll LOVE them!
