UPDATED: 7 months left to experience Texas

I realized the other day that Thomas and I are getting married in less than 7 months! The pure thought of that seems so crazy to me! My life is going to change dramatically in 7 months.  I’m happy, scared, nervous, over joyed…it’s definitely a mix of emotions.

I got to thinking that not only does 7 months signify the countdown to my wedding, it also signifies the amount of time I have left in Texas before I have to move!  I’ve surprised even myself this past year with my growing love for a state I never before wanted to claim, let alone stay in the rest of my adult life.  Now that I know I’m moving away, and probably never coming back to live, I find I’m clinging even harder to the Lone Star State.

With a mere 7 months to go, and because I love making lists, I’ve decided to compile a list of the top 7 things I want to in Texas BEFORE I move away.  I’ve come up with the first 4, but I’m open to any suggestions anyone wants to toss my way. Here’s what I have so far:

  1. Go to the State Fair of Texas. I’ve lived in Texas for 20 years and I’ve never been to the State Fair and neither has Thomas. This year we are going!
  2. Make the road trip from DFW to San Antonio one last time.  I made this trip all the time when I was in my first years in college. I don’t know why I want to do this again, but I do.  Gatorade, Funyuns and Skittles…here I come!
  3. Go to a Dallas Mavericks game. I LOVE watching basketball when I have to watch a sport.  I also love cheering the Mavs on and have only been to one game ever. It was actually a great time because I got to watch it from a suite and it was right behind one of the goals.  As much as I enjoyed getting spoiled that way, I’d also love to watch it from a poor-man’s seat!
  4. Go to the Paper Bear in San Marcos. This was a cute stationary and Texas-sized gift shop I used to go to back when I was in high school. I loved this store and I’d love to go back now to see if it’s just like I remembered it.

After your comments and suggestions, I’ve added the final 3, 4… 5:

  1. The Spring Blooms exhibit at the Dallas Arboretum. Thanks, Bex!
  2. Fiesta San Antonio at the end of April. Thanks, Mel!
  3. The Texas state capitol in Austin. I can’t believe I’ve never been there! Thanks for the inspiration, Nadia!
  4. Big Bend National Park. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do this. In fact, several years back Jes and I planned to go there on a roommate road trip but we never made it.  I realize this is QUITE a stretch, especially since I’m working now and probably can’t get enough time off to go all the way out there. So in lieu of this, I would settle for Possum Kingdom. I’ve always thought that was a funny name, but I hear it’s beautiful and it’s less than 75 miles west of Ft Worth – totally do-able!
  5. Go to one last first Monday in Canton. This is something I actually hope I can do with all my bridesmaids :)

Wedding Essentials

Thomas and I have the same goal for the start of our marriage: be as close to debt free as we can. It’s a noble goal and one I stand behind 100%; I really couldn’t be more blessed than to have a man who’s as determined as I am to have ourselves in a stable financial situation when we start our lives together.

Part of achieving that goal has been our strict adherence to a wedding budget. While some would see that as an obstacle or a damper on the wedding planning, I’ve actually approached it a bit differently. I kinda see it as  a game…a game I’m determined to win!  Like my friend, and bridesmaid – Brittany, I love a good deal.  Wedding planning is all about getting the best deal – at least for me it is.

In the game of hunting for a bargain, Thomas and I have realized there are several elements to a wedding that are nice to have, but not really essential.  Recently we’ve begun identifying what those things are, and deciding whether or not to include them in our wedding, and thus our wedding budget.

The first non-essential we decided we’d let go of was the Groom’s Cake.  We thought the idea of a groom’s cake for the wedding was nice, and we figured we could use a fun design to add some unique style to our wedding by how we decorated the groom’s cake. However, when all was said and done, we didn’t think it was essential, so we decided not to do one.

Another wedding-essential, or not, are wedding favors.  We were torn on this one because while we do believe they aren’t necessary, we did agree we wanted to have favors at the wedding. Therefore, they are something we have chosen to budget for.

Most recently we’ve been considering nixing the idea of the men wearing boutonniere’s.  For one, our wedding is a mix of vintage and modern, and it’s a backyard wedding, so we don’t think the formality that is symbolized in a boutonniere is necessary for our event.  Secondly, we feel like the guys will be dapper enough in their wedding-day duds, that perhaps flowers/berries on their lapel is an un-needed expense. We haven’t finalized that choice, but are pretty close.

So considering wedding essentials, and non-essentials, what do YOU think is a must-have for a wedding ?  And maybe more importantly, what are some non-essentials that we can get away with leaving out?

tooter-man

Me, to middle boy: (sniff, sniff) Did you just toot?

Middle boy: Excuuuuuuuuuuse me (grins ear to ear).

Youngest boy: He’s the tooter-man.

Me: Oh yeah? He is?

Youngest Boy: Uh, huh. God made him that way. God made him the tooter-man.

Wow, what a good excuse for a toot – God made me a tooter! Gotta love the mind of a 4 year old!

brownie bites

I love baking. It’s something that’s fun, easy and so rewarding when you’re done!  I like to bake with the boys because they always love what I make, and the youngest has been helping me in the kitchen since he was teeny tiny.

Sometimes I like to take the ordinary and mix it up – just to make it fun!  The other day I made brownies for them, but decided to make them in a mini muffin tin, like brownie bites you buy at the store.  I figured this would help as well when it came time to serve, so there wouldn’t be any comments from the peanut gallery of the “Why-is-his-piece-bigger-than-mine-it’s-not-fair” variety.

Voila!  They turned out great and the boys (as well as the grown-ups) loved them! Isn’t it fun to mix things up every now and then?
