I am a cold natured person. I always have been. Maybe it was one of those nature versus nurture phenomenons that started back when I was little. I used to tuck my mom in and she is one of those people who likes to be tucked in super tight on ALL sides. She would always complain of being cold so I’d tuck her in real good.
I know what you’re probably thinking – why are you tucking your mom in? Why isn’t she tucking you in? That’s another story for another day…
So I’ve always been keenly aware of how cold I am. Leave it to God’s humor to introduce me to my future hubs who is always HOT. Like, I can feel heat emitting off of his body. Which I guess is cool (no pun intended) since that makes him my very own personal heater, but it’s not so great when we are at his apartment, or in his car. Why? Because he ALWAYS wants the air conditioner on. And that….wait, I digress. This is not a story about him being hot, it’s about me being cold.
Ok, so I am cold. Like all the time. Like I love the summer heat, but hate the cold A/C blasting on me so I have even been known to turn the heater on in Texas in June. Not too high, but on nonetheless.
That being said I love wearing fleece pants around the house. More than that, I love wearing them anytime there is an inkling of cold weather. Like lately…it’s been dreadfully cold and I can barely get my laundry done fast enough to keep a clean pair in my dresser. My one complaint about fleece pants is the static. Especially in the dry winter! Being the light sleeper that I am, I often toss and turn in the middle of the night. About a year back I noticed during one such night that I could see sparks under my covers! It was from my fleece pants sparking the static electricity in the air! Scary as it was, it was also kinda neat!
Since then however, the neatness of it has worn off until last night when I had a scary revelation: what if I start a fire one day in my sleep? The reason this only recently became a consideration of mine is because I got an electric blanket for Christmas from a friend and I have used it EVERY SINGLE NIGHT since I got it.
And based on the limited knowledge of Physics I retained in my brain from college: electric blanket + electric sparks = not a good idea.
So before you go thinking why are you wearing fleece pants AND using an electric blanket? First tell me this: should I be worried?
So last weekend my mom came in to town, she lives in Virginia, to go wedding dress shopping with me! It was a long process because before she came I decided to do my homework. I, along with the few bridesmaids I tricked dragged invited, scoured every bridal salon/shop/boutique this side of North Texas.
Here are the ones I went to, and a brief summary of my thoughts on the place:
1. Mii’s Bridal Salon in Garland. First, don’t let the bars on the windows scare you – it’s a safe area!
Pros: large selection, good prices on silk/taffeta gowns, if you’re assertive enough you can push the sales people away and do your own thing (this is what me and my girl’s did!)
Cons: Small dressing room, you have to sneak taking photos because they aren’t allowed, crowded waiting area, sales people weren’t really objective and said everything looked nice, even the ones I was wearing and frowning at in the mirror – not too convincing!
2. Lulu’s Bridal Salon in Uptown Dallas. It’s in a cute little yellow Victorian home!
Pros: Good selection, reasonable prices, good selection for bridesmaids, and if you go on a weekday you can pretty much have the entire salon to yourself! (Note: I ended up going for the 3rd time on a Friday afternoon and after spending a couple hours there decided on my dress and bought it from them!)
Cons: They do NOT take appointments, parking is limited, Saturday’s are rushed and good luck trying to sneak a picture in! They only allow picture taking on the day you buy!
3. David’s Bridal in North Dallas/Plano. Parking kind of sucks, but it’s easy to find.
Pros: Located off a major road/easy to find, large selection with broad range of prices – most of them very cheap, lots of mirrors, large bridesmaids selection, they let you take photos
Cons: You have to have an appointment ahead of time, the dresses are mass produced, I didn’t like the selection/quality of the gowns – but at those prices that’s what I’d expect, if business is slow you may find several consultants at your dressing room door making you feel ganged-up on.
4. Alfred Angelo in Plano. A lot of hype, not a lot of hits.
Pros: Well known name, cute bridesmaids dresses & lots of colors for the bridesmaids
Cons: Almost all of the sample sizes were at least 4 sizes too big and I didn’t like their bridal selection at all. Not one dress I tried on caught my eye in any way – guess it just was not my style!
5. Stardust Celebrations in Plano. Big store, bigger prices!
Pros: Large selection of bridesmaids dresses, large boutique, nice sales people, good assortment of bridal gowns, they let you take photos
Cons: Dresses start at $1400/1500 and can range upward of $10,000. This wasn’t posted anywhere online and came as a bit of a shock when I realized. I ended up finding several in my price point, but they all were a little steep for what I felt right about paying. (Note: Lulu’s is a sister-store of Stardust and offers some of the same designers’ lower price point designs.)
My advice:
Bride to bride (or to reader) I suggest doing your homework before you go out for the final sale. I spent about 3 weekends scouring the stores (and even online boutiques – I recommend HalfBridal.com because they were super friendly, offered me 2 discounts and seemed very reputable) until I narrowed it down to the final 3 dresses. Conveniently for me they were all featured at one place, Lulu’s Bridal Salon, and so we didn’t have to travel all over DFW looking for bridal gowns.
Another option is to check in to resale shops and stores that do bridal gown rentals. I was open to both of these ideas, but my mom was buying my bridal gown as a gift to me and insisted I buy a new one – to which I obliged her!
I also recommend taking photos (when you can – even if you have to get sneaky, but not so sneaky you get in trouble!) because later on when you are home you can take a look at them and let the images sit in your mind. Revisit the photos every week or so to see if the dress still WOW’s you. Decide which dress stays in your mind or the one you can’t stop thinking about. If it’s the most expensive one you’ve tried on and you are falling for it I recommend two things:
Finally I can’t stress enough how important it is to have friends/family there to support you. Every time I went to try on dresses I had at least one of my bridesmaids with me. She is the tell-it-like-it-is kind of friend, which for me is exactly what I needed for this decision! I mean you’re trying on the most beautiful gowns, it’s not like they are UGLY and easy to rule out! Find a trusted friend/adviser, make lots of appointments/do your homework, take photos, think about it and good luck!
I’m not a coffee drinker. Except for a short stint during May Mini-mester my junior year of college, I’ve never regularly drank coffee. This is kind of surprising seeing as how my mom always drank two cups of coffee every morning while I was growing up, and how my two best friends are both coffee lovers. I just never liked the taste…and I felt like if I doctored it up to the point that I did like the taste, I’d rather use those calories on a piece of cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory, not a mediocre cup of Joe.
Tea however, is a different story. When I want something warm to drink I love me a cup of hot tea! Make it chamomile and I’m set! So imagine my excitement when I was invited to the grand opening of the flagship Village Tea Company’s store in Dallas! As if the fact that they specialized in tea wasn’t enticing enough – they promised me endless tea and even a light dinner. Sold. Upon arriving I immediately took to the ambiance…it was very stylish, but cozy at the same time. The kinda place you just want to hang out in for a couple of hours. (And the free Wi-Fi doesn’t hurt either!)
I found a comfy seat and was greeted by a friendly tea-enthusiast. “What would you like to try?”
I went for the safety, “Umm, the Chamomile sounds good!”
“Sure, would you like it sweetened? We can sweeten it with Agave nectar – it’s just as sweet as sugar but better for you!”
“Awesome! Sounds good.”
About 5 mintues later she hands me this:
Heaven in a mug. I didn’t know it before the first sip, but once I had a taste I knew I had found the best Chamomile tea I’ve ever had. And I’ve had a lot of it! Not halfway through the cup, she comes back.
“How is it?”
“It’s amazing!” I declare. “Really good.”
“Great, just let me know if you need another cup, or if you want to try something new.”
Later dinner is served.
What I like about this place is the tea is reasonable, but high quality, and so is the food. They offer light meals in addition to their comprehensive tea selection and all of them are budget-friendly.
After dinner the tea-pusher (as I’ve affectionately nicknamed her) is back. “Another cup?”
“Heck yeah!” I reply.
The best thing about enjoying a cup of tea is doing it with friends.
It’s like coffee, only you feel like it’s better for you. Perhaps it’s because tea is a foreign practice. Or maybe it’s cause all the cool kids AREN’T doing it…whatever the reason, tea evokes sophistication. And I’m a girl who likes to be sophisticated!
Speaking of sophisticated, they even sell a cool travel-mug with the infuser built right in! I’m all about cute and functional marrying together – so this thing was total eye candy for me.
I oogled over it for a bit, but decided not to get one…at least not right then. It was cool though, and it’s totally user-friendly, especially for the inexperienced loose tea drinker, like myself. Yes, I’ve pretty much been exclusively using bagged tea – which I learned that night is apparently inferior to loose tea. Who knew??? Not me.
My only complaint about Village Tea company is that they are a bit of a tease. You see they got me hooked on their fabulous Chamomile tea, only for me to find out that they don’t sell it. Dang! I was so hoping to hurry home to brew my own cup! Perhaps though, it’s a good thing, because now I have an excuse to go back. Not that I really needed one…
Cheers!
